Summer Reading Programme

Introduction

During the summer holidays, many students lose knowledge and skills that they had acquired during the school year. This phenomenon is referred to as Summer Learning Loss (also known as Summer Reading Loss, Summer Slide or Summer Slump). International studies suggest this disproportionately affects students from low socio-economic backgrounds. Since 2010 a New Zealand-based initiative has been implemented to help address this and support students and their families over the summer.

This website gives information on  Summer Learning Loss, results from the various programmes, guidance for schools, and ideas for parents and students

Our Mission

To reduce Summer Learning Loss in New Zealand by utilising international and local research to develop practical solutions for schools and parents.
